Description

The second in a series of three shear-cut holly bowls with a natural wiped urushi finish and turned on a pole-lathe. This slightly closed form was super frustrating to get right. I have imagined these bowls for sometime, ever since I made my holly bowl for the 52weeks52bowls project. I discovered that unseasoned holly is so waxy that I could let my hook tool take a shear-scraping cut all the way round the bowl and leave a very clean finish. This is a very tricky cut to do, getting progressively harder as you edge up the bowl. I really like the effect though and so was delighted to get some holly recently from a friend in Bristol to try it out. The urushi finish really highlights the toolmarks, particularly the sunset/scallop shell/paw print in the bottom of the inside of the bowl.

(Care Instructions – No dishwashers, no microwaves, and avoid metal scourers and soaking for long periods of time. Urushi also degrades in direct sunlight so store in the shade)
